Police arrested a man who tried to rape a 19-year-old woman on an East Harlem street Tuesday after a witness called 911 and thwarted the attack.
The victim exited a yellow cab and was walking along Madison Avenue about 4:30 a.m. when Demetrius Edwards, 34, grabbed her from behind, threw her between two parked cars and then repeatedly slammed her head against the ice and snow, police said.
Meanwhile, a witness heard the woman screaming from inside his apartment. He called 911 and gave police a detailed description of the attacker.
Cops arrested Edwards a short time later and charged him with attempted rape.
The woman was transported to Harlem Hospital, where she was treated and released.
Edwards is listed as a level 3 sex offender on the New York State Sex Offender Registry. According to records, he threatened, choked and raped a 13-year-old girl at gunpoint in 2000.
The New York Daily News reported that Edwards was released from Bare Hill Correctional Facility in 2009. Since then, he was sent back to prison twice for violating parole and was last released on parole in September.
